My dealer is delaying delivery of a 4400 HST due to a modification to the HST valve plate. He says the part number is LVA 10024 and it affects all 4200, 4300, and 4400 models. Does anyone know about this modification kit? When did it come out and does it have problems? It is supposed to bring the tractor to a slower stop when you release the pedal. Thanks for your help.

Joe--I was hoping that several owners of 4200/4300/4400HST tractors would respond to your posting since my 4400 usually stops very abruptly when the pedal is released. OTOH, once in a while it will freewheel and just coast for five or ten feet (nearly took out my deck). It is my hope that the kit that you mentioned might be a fix for this, but have not had the time to visit with my dealer. Hopefully, someone in the know will respond to your post.Mike S. ....

Joe,my JD4400 does the same thing. If you abruptly remove your foot from the HST pedal, the tractor stops quick enough to tear up the lawn. I have not had a problem with it free-wheeling though. ....

I have wondered if the abrupt stop was ok so I am glad to see this post. Will the kit be a no charge modification or will you have to purchase it? If anyone finds out please let me know. Sorry to see your delivery is delayed but it may be worth the wait. The abrupt stop, no coast at all, situation is a very unatural feeling and does tear up the gravel. It is almost like slamming on the brakes. ....

I have a 4400HST with 10 hours on it. My problem is a little different. Mine slows gradually until moving slowly then jerks to a stop. I thought the pedal linkage was sticking, I was looking at it last night. I will talk to the dealer today. ....

My Kubota B2710 HST stops quick when you let off the pedal. Maybe its not quite like throwing on the brakes, but I seldom ever touch the brakes. ....

I wanted to clarify what is happening with my 4400HST as it is pretty minor. I am doing lots of mowing so I try to be really gentle with this new machine. As I slow the machine down and lift my foot off the forward pedal, most of the time the pedal follows my foot up. But once in a while it sticks down for a short time, then pops up to my foot or comes up against the stop. This brings everything to kind of a sudden stop. In my case, this problem is not a "I ran through the barn wall" sort of condition. If it were my old tractor, I don't think I give it a second thought. I am so pleased with the 4400 that this little imperfection sort of stands out. I have nothing else to complain about. I probably like working with the Deere a little too much. I have been neglecting other jobs…. ....

I have a John Deere 4200 HST, and I have to admit I was never happy with the way it came to a stop, no matter how gentle you are trying to be with the pedals. I had a John Deere 855 HST and that had a great Hydro Transmission on it. It came to gently slower stops, which allows you much more control. ON my new 4200HST no matter how I lift my foot from the pedels, the machine comes to a stop very abrupt, (not too bad on hard surfaces) but on grass it kills it.. just tears it up, My wheels do a very quick counter rotation when stoppping. not a nice thing.. I really wish they combined more of the 55 series, good points on this tractor with its good points.. If not for the better looks of machine, and loader performance, seat etc.. I wish I bought a left over 955 machine.. ....

Every hydro I've ever used created a real "braking" effect when "quickly" releasing the forward pedel/lever. If your old JD's didn't, I think you just need to give yourself time to adjust. I own a 4100 and demo'd a 4200 and both units reacted like any other unit I've used. Naturally, the JD 70 or 55 series was not one of the types I've ever used, so I guess I can't feel your pain. ....

My 4400HST mainly does abrupt stops after being in reverse and releasing that pedal. If I am going forward, the stops are more abrupt than that of my 955 or orange tractors, but if I let up on the reverse pedal, my 4400 stops INSTANTLY. Do those of you with the problem of abrupt stopping experience it worse fromo reverse??
